Welcome to Walmgate Day Nursery Ltd, we are a 42 place day nursery situated in the historic part of York known as Walmgate, which is a short walk from the City Centre. The building is several hundred years old but has been converted to form a modern day care facility that meets all requirements, yet retains character and a nice homely feel. As we are in a centre location we only have a small outdoor play area but this has been designed to maximise the use of space so each child will benefit from some outdoor play each day. In addition to the outdoor area, children enjoy regular outings and visits to local attractions such as Jorvik Centre and Castle Museum. The nursery also has the use of five drop off and pick up parking spaces for use by our customers.
We have three separate rooms which accommodate three separate age ranges, a Baby Room for ages from 3 month to 2 years, a 2-3 years Tweenies Room and a Pre-School Room for children from 3-5 years. The ratio of staff to children within the Nursery is in accordance with Ofsted requirements and we employ qualified and experienced staff.
Our aim is to provide the best quality childcare in a stimulating environment with lots of learning opportunities. We aim to achieve this by:
The Baby Room 3 months to 2 years
The nursery has a separate baby unit which accommodates 12 babies up to the age of 2 years. They are able to transfer up to the 2-3 years (tweenies room) at any time from 18 months to 2 years and this will be judged on each childs individual needs and stage of development.
The Tweenies Room 2-3 years
We have a well equipped 15 place Tweenie Room, with separate areas to explore sand, water, painting and play dough. The main room has a designated area for construction and small world toys and there is a quiet area for books and to have a well earned rest. We work on the Early Years Foundation Stage with each child and now registered to two year old funding from the government for those children who are eligable for this provision. We aim to integrate your child into the Pre-school Room at 3 years 3 months or as soon after this as is practicably possible.
The Pre-school Room 3-5 years
We have 15 places in our well equipped pre-school room where planned learning activities are prepared. The activities are planned around the seven areas of learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage which encourages children to achieve Early Learning Goals. As we are working towards these goals we are registered to take three and four year old funding from the Government. Below you will find a breakdown of each of the seven areas with a brief description.
Personal, social and emotional development
Self-confidence and self-awareness: children are confident to try new activities, and say why they like some activities more than others. They are confident to speak in a familier group, will talk about their ideas, and will choose the resources they need for their chosen activities. They say when the do or don't need help.
Communication, Language and Literacy
Listening and attention: children listen attentively in a range of situations. They listen to stories, accurately anticipating key events and respond to what they hear with relevant comments, questions or actions. They give their attention to what others say and respond appropriately, while engaged in another activity.
Understanding: children follow instructions involving several ideas or actions. They answer 'how' and 'why' questions about their experiences and in response to stories or events.
Moving and handling: children show good control adn co-ordination in large and small movements. they move confidently in range of ways, safely negotiating space. they handle equipment and tools effectively, including pencils for writing.
Health and self care: children know the importance for good health of physical exercise, and a healthy diet, and talk about ways to keep healthy and safe. they manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs successfully, including dressing and going to the toilet independently.
Knowledge and understanding of the world
In this area children learn about their environments, early geographical concepts, history and introducing science and technology.
Their will be opportunities for your child to explore texture and shapes, expressing ideas and feelings in a personal and unique way through the medium of music, literacy or drama through role play.
In all rooms we record your child’s development in the form of Observation Records and Progress Reports which we send out to you at the end of each term.
Key Person System
The nursery operates a key person system where your child’s development will be progressed and monitored by the same member of staff as often as possible. You will be informed who your child’s key person will be on admission to the nursery.
